Boarding the plane

If there's one thing they do well in Hong Kong it's lining people up to get them we're they need to go. It's inspiring in its efficiency.

The author in action

Picture proof that I actually go on these adventures. Someone pointed out that there's not a lot of pics of me from this sojourn in Asia. Waiting in the Hong Airport Terminal 1 Departure lounge using incredibly slow, but free Wi-Fi.

Having a Hong Kong ID card has its advantages ...

While Americans don't need a visa to go to Japan, getting in and out of Hong Kong (SAR) and China does involve filling out lots of little forms.
I gots ma papers in order, but Bob is traveling through the region on tourist visas.

Airport Check-in at Hong Kong MTR

This is part of what makes Hong Kong pretty amazing. From downtown Central you can check in for your flight, drop off your luggage and then jump on the train for a comfortable 30-minute trip to the airport.
Also, this trip costs about US$13, so it's a steal.
The flight on Cathay Pacific is booked solid, so no window or aisle seats for Bob and I.

The journey of a thousand miles ...

Begins with a lot of last-minute, "ohmigod, did you remember to bring ... ? You're not bringing that, are you ... ?" stuff.
Bob and I get our act together at 5 am HK time for an eight-day trip to Japan, highlights to include Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and a visit to the Miho Museum, designed by I.M. Pei. We dreamed of going there for years ...

God (or Nature) has no mercy

From NASA: "NASA's Terra satellite has captured another image of Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull volcano ash cloud, now moving into Germany. Eyjafjallajökull continues to spew ash into the air and the ash clouds are still impacting air travel in Northern Europe."

It's all about resources ...

From CNN: "China's dominant position in the production of rare earth minerals has long-reaching implications for the U.S. Department of Defense, according to a recent government report."

Religious and ideological wars pale in comparison to the battles for resources. Fossil fuels, minerals, water ... the list if "basics" is kind of staggering.

Crime against humanity

It has bananas on it and white chocolate shavings, yet manages to still look grotesque.

You've been warned ...

I find this funny because getting a napkin in a restaurant in Hong Kong can be difficult.

Terrorism is the new black. Who knew?

From the BBC: "The two-year international study of Islamic radicals said terrorism could be defeated by making it boring."

It gets better: "The study found the "cool factor" was the biggest draw to al-Qaeda and that terrorism could be defeated by demystifying and deglamourising jihad."

Since when have suicide and self-immolation seemed "cool" or "sexy" to anyone? Who paid for this study? Is anyone paying attention? Knock, knock. Is this thing on ... ???

Live and in Real Time

Flightradar24.com shows live aircraft traffic all over Europe. This will give nerdbumps to even the most jaded geek.

It's been amazing to watch the skies clear over Europe in the wake of the volcanic eruption from beneath the Eyjafjallajoekull glacier in Iceland.

What I find amazing is how the interconnectedness of the Internet mimics the Earth's, but on a time delay: The world convulses -- an earthquake, volcano, tropical storm -- and then the ripples of human reaction -- reportage, analysis, photos, videos -- follow now within minutes of the event.

Nexus One made a profit

From TechCrunch: " ... Google revealed that Nexus One, Google’s recently launched Android phone, is a profitable business for the search giant."

Interesting to see how quickly Google will roll out more hardware products (iPad/Kindle-, if not "killer", than adversary) and how Android will be adapted to the operating system market. I wonder if they will eventually favor Android OS over Chrome OS for personal computing because of the ubiquity of mobile phones?

Porn. For the blind.

Gives new meaning to being "felt up" as it comes with "raised" pictures of naked men and women and braille text.

Hollywood's Self-worth

From the Telegraph (UK): "A conservation group trying to save the Hollywood sign is believed to be on the verge of reaching the $12.5 million (£8.1 million) it needs to secure the future of the iconic monument."

I am confused that in a town where some of the celebrities make that much money for a couple of minutes screen time, the conservation group has barely collected the amount needed before the deadline.

From the NY Times: "As secretary of state, Henry Kissinger canceled a U.S. warning against carrying out international political assassinations that was to have gone to Chile and two neighboring nations just days before a former ambassador was killed by Chilean agents on Washington's Embassy Row in 1976, a newly released State Department cable shows."
