This is really cool ...

... but if the email server outages are anything to go by, I just worry.

Or can I just casually quaff throughout the afternoon?

I agree with the response ...

... if you're going to take on the trappings of a world power, a major pole in an emerging multi-polar world, at least have the stones to make a bold statement.

Health care in the U.S. is worst where Republicans poll best.

From Crooks & Liars: "The diagnosis isn't pretty for Republicans committed to denying the health care their constituents need most of all. The 2009 rankings (above) reveal that nine of the top 10 healthiest states voted for Barack Obama in 2008. Conversely, 9 of the 10 cellar dwellers backed John McCain in 2008; four years earlier, the 15 unhealthiest states voted for George W. Bush for President."

Fear-mongering or speculation?

I wonder: Does anyone ever mitigate these studies with studies on the evolution of plants, animals, ecosystems, what have you, in order to see if there are adaption rates? In other words: Isn't one of evolution's key points the survival of the fittest?

How to solve a problem like China ...

I just love how well-reasoned Foreign Policy magazine is about these things. Like The Economist, they take a capitalist approach, but without the partisan rancor.

Become Vegan; Save the Planet.

From The Economist: "Earlier in the week the London Times splashed a headline quoting Nick Stern, a scientist, urging people to “Give up meat to save the planet”. The truth, the scientist admitted in the text of the article, is more banal: raising livestock produces greenhouse gases; and a vegetarian diet is better for the climate. Headline writers scoff at such subtleties."

If prevention is the best medicine ...

Do the ends justify the means?

The new way of war -- Predator drones, long-distance missile strikes -- have proven to be deadly effective, but not as accurate as the quaint term "smart bomb" would lead us to believe.

As the numbers of civilian casualties line up in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the U.S. and its allies could be looking at a Pyrrhic victory.
